RootsTech Announces Fifteen FREE Streamed Sessions

The RootsTech conference will be held next week in Salt Lake City. SCGS and Jamboree will have a booth (#727) in the exhibit hall.

This conference is going to be huge. They are expecting 10,000 attendees in the Convention Center, with another 20,000 online. If you are among the 10,000, please be sure to stop by and say hi to us.

If you are not able to attend in person, you can participate from your Barcalounger. RootsTech will be live-streaming 15 sessions that will be viewed on the FamilySearch.org website. By the way, eight of the RootsTech speakers will also be with us at Jamboree 2014. [Tammy Hepps, Michael Leclerc, Lisa Alzo, Crista Cowan, Daniel Horowitz, Lisa Louise Cooke, Josh Taylor and Randy Whited.] What a great way to get to know these people in advance of Jamboree.

The streamed sessions are a wonderful way to attend RootsTech without walking in the snow. It's like getting the entire conference for *free* -- and *free* is always good.

If the streamed sessions are handled like they have been in the past, no advance registration will be needed. Just log on to FamilySearch and enjoy yourself. If that's not the case, we will post an update.

The list of streamed sessions is available on the FamilySearch website. Get more detail on the sessions here, and download the RootsTech app to remind you when it's time to log on.

This is being posted on both the Jamboree and SCGS blogs. Apologies if you receive duplicate emails. The RootsTech streamed videos are in no way related to the SCGS webinar series.

When information passed on from researcher to researcher doesn't add up, it's time to tear down the walls and rebuild anew. This methodology lecture shows how erroneous conclusions can sneak into our research uncontested.

Dr. Michael D. Lacopo has been researching since 1980 and has lectured internationally and written for numerous periodicals and journals. A retired veterinarian, Dr. Lacopo applies the same methodic, careful, scientific approach to his research as he did his profession. His strengths lay in immigrant genealogy, German and Swiss research, Mennonite research and chasing ancestors in the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest states.

The initial webcast of each session is offered to the public free of charge. Webinars are archived and available only to SCGS members as a benefit of membership in the society. The webinar archive can be found at http://www.scgsgenealogy.com/webinar/archive-index.html.

[CA-SCGS] Jamboree On the Road - Stop In and Say Hi!

The Southern California Genealogy Jamboree team will be on the road over the next few weeks, meeting with all our friends and exhibiting at a number of family history events. We hope you all stop by our table and say hi and introduce yourself if we haven't met before.

Here's a tip: When we exhibit at another conference, we typically bring along a door prize (a free basic registration to Jamboree worth $145). If you're not a lucky winner, you can take advantage of a special $5 discount for registrations purchased during the event. Pick up your copy of the Jamboree registration form and the SCGS Webinar Series schedule for 2014.

Here is the schedule, along with links to the conference websites:

February 1 - Genealogy NOW - San Luis Obispo Genealogical Society featuring Judy G. Russell, JD, CG, CGL, The Legal Genealogist, and Geoff Rasmussen of Legacy Family Tree, and Sharyn Hoyt Mills, MLIS, professional genealogist.

February 6-8 - Salt Lake City - RootsTech. The biggest upcoming conference, of course, is RootsTech which is held in Salt Lake City from February 6-8. Please come see us at Booth 727, which is across the aisle from the media hub. RootsTech is one of our favorite exhibiting opportunities because it allows us to meet so many new friends and hug those we've known for a while. We'll have a full contingent of SCGS representatives in the booth throughout the conference: Leo Myers, Paula Hinkel, Jane Van Tour, Barbara Randall and Judi Ramsey. SCGS members pick up one of our beautiful name badge ribbons.

February 22 - Whittier Area Genealogical Society with Laura Prescott

March 1 - Orange County California Genealogical Society Genealogy BASH and Book Faire with a great line-up of speakers: Barbara Renick, Hank Z. Jones FASG, Colleen Fitzpatrick, CeCe Moore, Gena Philibert-Ortega, Geoff Rasmussen of Legacy Family Tree, Randy Seaver, Linda Serna, and Morris Thurston.

March 8 - Hemet-San Jacinto Genealogical Society.

Announcing the 2014 Southern California Genealogy Jamboree and Family History and DNA Conference

The Southern California Genealogical Society proudly announces the 45th Annual Southern California Genealogy Jamboree. The popular conference will be held at our usual venue, the Los Angeles Marriott Burbank Airport Hotel, 2500 Hollywood Way, Burbank, CA, from Friday through Sunday, June 6 to 8, 2014. Online registration is open on the Jamboree website, and the Marriott's website is ready to take your reservation.

Jamboree combines 55 speakers, over 60 exhibitors, 134 class sessions for a variety of experience levels, and special events to create an exceptional event. Banquet speakers John P. Colletta, PhD, FUGA and Katherine York, archivist for the multimillion-dollar personal collection of '60s rock impresario Bill Graham of Fillmore fame, will entertain and instruct us.

Theme: The theme of the 2014 Jamboree is Golden Memories: Discovering Your Family History. Our heritage focus will be on European ancestors. Class sessions are scheduled for German, Irish, English / UK, Scotland, Eastern Europe, Italian, Mennonite, Swedish, and Russian, as well as African American and Jewish classes.

Jamboree will be the culmination of a year-long celebration of the Society's 50th Anniversary, and special activities will commemorate the Decade of the 60s.  Dust off your tie dye tees and pillbox hats and take part in our Sunday noon "fashion show."  Winner by popular vote will receive a free registration to the 2015 Jamboree.

Following on the heels of last year's very successful event, we will again hold Family History and DNA: Genetic Genealogy in 2014. The conference will be produced by the Southern California Genealogical Society and sponsored jointly by SCGS and the International Society of Genetic Genealogy (ISOGG). Family History and DNA will be held Thursday, June 5, at the Los Angeles Marriott Burbank.

Keynote speaker Dr. Maurice Gleeson is by profession a psychiatrist and pharmaceutical physician. He is also a professional actor and has appeared on the West End stage in London. Maurice is co-administrator of the Ireland mitochondrial DNA project. He has given talks on genetic genealogy at the ‘Back to Our Past’ exhibition in Dublin (2012 & 2013) and also at the National Library of Ireland (Dublin), The National Archives in Kew (London), and at various regional and local meetings. His presentation will be of interest to Irish researchers in general, as well as those who are DNA users: "How DNA will Change the Face of Irish Genealogy."

Other speakers at Family History and DNA include many of the leaders of the genetic genealogical community: Blaine Bettinger, JD; Judy G. Russell, JD, CG; CeCe Moore; Tim Janzen, MD; Diahan Southard; Alice Fairhurst; Cheri Mello; Katherine Borges; Bonny Cook; and Dr. Kathryn Johnston.

Special pricing for 2014 gives a discount to those who register for both Jamboree and the Family History and DNA conference. In addition, DNA conference registration prices have been reduced to make the information available to a wider audience.

The best way to keep in touch with Jamboree and the DNA conference is to subscribe to the Jamboree blog, either through RSS feed or by updates sent directly to your email.

Ticked Off! What Can the
Pre-1850 Census Tell Me?

It’s exciting when we are able to find our ancestors on every census they appeared on, until we reach 1840 and beyond. Those pesky tic marks seem to get in our way as we work to extend our pedigrees. Just what do they mean, and how can they help me?

The daughter of avid genealogists, Peggy Clements Lauritzen, AG, spent time in courthouses and cemeteries while other children were playing on swings and going to the beach. The love of her family’s history has never left her. With her experience as a former Family History Director, she is a frequent speaker at genealogy events.

The initial webcast of each session is offered to the public free of charge. Webinars are archived and available only to SCGS members as a benefit of membership in the society. The webinar archive can be found at http://www.scgsgenealogy.com/webinar/archive-index.html.
